SATB (w. divisi), Crotales.
c. 35 minutes.
Premiered by James Jordan and the Westminster Williamson Voices in April 2020.
In creating a setting of these ancient words, I wanted to use a contemporary description of the grieving process to structure the music. The emotional core of the piece is the use of the four part grieving process of 'Reeling, Feeling, Dealing, and Healing'. Clouds of melodies including plainchant and Cumbrian folksong.
Tenebrae Lumini (2016)
SATB (w. divisi).
c. 4 minutes.
Premiered by Magdalene College Chapel Choir (Cambridge) in April 2016.
Tenebrae Lumini is a setting of the morning hymn by St Ambrose of Milan, which ties the powerful imagery of sunrise with Christian doctrine. The piece is a meditation on these ideas, with the harmony slowly growing from a pitch centre (C) as the music progresses from ‘dark’ to ‘light’.
